Que : How does Level-II ultrasound a special ultrasound?
Ans :

What a level 2 ultrasound screens for

The level 2 ultrasound is anomaly scan in which baby is measured from head, abdomen, legs to find out the gestation age.

These measurements are important to  make sure baby is growing appropriately (and that his or her gestational age is still on target). A survey of the organs, including the umbilical cord, ensures that they are developing normally (or identifies any potential problems as soon as possible). The sonographer will also be looking at your amniotic fluid levels, the location of the placenta, and the fetal heart rate. Settle in to enjoy the show: The detailed level 2 scan can take 30 to 45 minutes ( time mainly depends on the position of baby at the time of doing scan)

When it is done

It is done between 18-22 wks.

How a level 2 ultrasound is done

It needs latest high end equipment  for doing this scan. Images are formed on a video screen. To get the most comprehensive assessment, the sonographer will be aiming for many different views from lots of different angles in this anatomy scan.  The sonologist goes according to standard protocol and sees every thing and ensures everything is all right and then gives a print of photographs taken and then write the detailed report.

 What are the risks involved

There are no significant risks associated with ultrasounds as it uses the sound wavesthough medical guidelines caution against unnecessary exposure to ultrasound — which is why your practitioner will schedule only a handful of them throughout your pregnancy.

Is Level II USG different from the routine ultrasound

A level II ultrasound scan refers to a special type of scan to assess the fetus for structural abnormalities. A qualified and experienced doctor, who has acquired the skill to do so does this. It is usually carried out between 18-22 weeks of pregnancy in order to detect fetal abnormalities that may compromise the quality of life, and gives the parents options for treatment or termination of the pregnancy. It is also called an Anomalies Scan or a Targeted Investigation for Fetal Anomalies. In India, the MTP act does not allow terminations after 20 weeks and, therefore, the level II study is done at 19 weeks of pregnancy. Owing to technical and statistical limitations, not all abnormalities can be assessed on an ultrasound.
